As you start to accumulate resources in Minecraft, you’ll run out of room in your inventory. When this happens, the simplest solution is to put any non-essential items in a chest. The guide below shows you how to craft a chest and make it even bigger.
Making a Chest in Minecraft
There aren’t too many items easier to make than a chest in Minecraft. It only requires one basic resource that you can obtain within two minutes of stepping foot into a new world. The crafting recipe for a chest is as follows:
- At a crafting table, place eight Planks of any kind in all the boxes except for the middle one
Planks are extremely simple to obtain. All you need to do is chop down a tree, acquire its logs, and then place those logs into a single box at a crafting table. This produces dozens of Planks, which you can use to construct a base or make a chest. As previously stated, you only need eight Planks to make a single chest, which can come from two tree logs.

Once you’ve crafted the chest, equip it on your hotbar and hover over that hotbar spot. You can now place the chest on any applicable block in Minecraft. A basic chest can hold 27 items, which is more than enough for a player in the early game. However, if you want to increase that limit, you can craft another chest and place it directly to the left or right of an existing one. This will combine the two chests to make them one, doubling the capacity of the chest’s inventory (to 54 items).
While you can just build multiple chests in different areas, the larger chest looks cleaner throughout your base and saves room. Chests are also used in a variety of different recipes in Minecraft, including a Boat with Chest, so it’s always wise to have some extra chests on hand.
